Ingredients

  • 4 cups sliced peeled apples preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar light or dark
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter cold and cubed

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Grater or food processor (optional for butter)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, and salt until evenly coated. Spread the apples in an even layer across the bottom of your prepared baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, combine the flour, oats, and brown sugar. Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apples, covering them completely.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and bubbling around the edges, and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  6. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

For an extra burst of flavor, sprinkle a little nutmeg or ginger into the apple mixture. You can also add chopped nuts to the crumble topping for extra crunch.
