Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread slices (baguette, ciabatta, or sandwich bread) preferably a firm, crusty variety
  • 2 large ripe tomatoes sliced into thin rounds
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella sliced into even rounds
  • 8 leaves fresh basil leaves whole
  • to taste olive oil for brushing
  • to taste salt and freshly ground black pepper for seasoning

Equipment

  • Toaster or Panini Press
  • Knife

Method

  1. Toast the bread slices until golden brown and crispy, then set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Arrange the tomato slices on one slice of toast, overlapping slightly for an even, colorful layer.
  3. Place mozzarella slices over the tomato, covering the entire layer to create a creamy, white base.
  4. Gently add basil leaves over the cheese, pressing them slightly into the layers so they release aroma and stay in place.
  5. Brush the top of the bread lightly with olive oil to add flavor and promote a shiny, crisp finish when assembled.
  6. Carefully place the second slice of toasted bread on top to complete the sandwich, pressing down gently to help everything stick together.
  7. Cut the sandwich diagonally or in half, revealing colorful layers with juicy tomatoes, melting cheese, and fragrant basil.
  8. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste, then serve immediately for maximum freshness.
