- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Once melted and bubbling, add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally, cooking slowly until the onions turn a deep golden brown and develop a rich caramel aroma, about 30-40 minutes.3 large yellow onions
