Method
- Preheat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Form the ground beef into four evenly sized, thin patties and season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Place the patties onto the hot skillet, cooking for about 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. During the last minute, top each with a slice of cheese to melt.
- While the patties cook, toast the buns until golden brown, either in a toaster or lightly in a hot oven. This adds crunch and enhances flavor.
- In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, mustard, and a pinch of salt and pepper to create the special sauce. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
- Slice the toasted buns into three layers: bottom bun, middle bun, and top bun. Spread a generous layer of the special sauce on the bottom and middle buns.
- Layer shredded lettuce and diced pickles on the bottom bun, followed by a beef patty. Repeat with the middle bun: sauce, lettuce, pickles, followed by the second beef patty with melted cheese.
- Finish by placing the top bun onto the assembled layers. Press gently to compact everything slightly and help it hold together.
- Slice the burger in half if desired, reveal the juicy layers and melty cheese, and enjoy immediately with your favorite sides.
Notes
Feel free to customize with extra toppings like onions, pickles, or different cheeses. For best results, assemble just before serving to keep the buns crispy and the ingredients fresh.
