Ingredients

  • 1 lb pound ground beef 80/20 for juiciness
  • 4 small sesame seed hamburger buns preferably with tops and bottoms
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise for the sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish adds tang and sweetness
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard for the sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar balances the sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika adds flavor to sauce
  • 1 leaf iceberg lettuce finely shredded
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese processed cheese works well
  • 4 pickles pickle slices optional, for layering
  • salt to taste salt for seasoning beef
  • pepper to taste black pepper for seasoning beef

Equipment

  • Skillet or griddle
  • Mixing bowls
  • Spatula
  • Small bowl for sauce
  • Baking sheet (optional for toasting buns)

Method

  1. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Mix the ground beef with a pinch of salt and pepper, then divide into two equal portions and shape into thin, round patties slightly larger than your buns. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through, flipping once.
  2. While the patties cook, toast the sesame seed buns lightly in the oven or on a separate pan until they are slightly golden and fragrant. This adds a hint of crunch and enhances flavor.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white vinegar, and paprika until smooth. This will become your signature sauce, rich and tangy.
  4. Shred the iceberg lettuce finely, creating a crisp, fresh layer. Prepare the cheese slices and set aside for assembly.
  5. Arrange the bottom buns on a platter, then spread a generous layer of the homemade sauce over the cut side. Layer with shredded lettuce, a slice of cheese, and a few pickle slices for that iconic flavor combination.
  6. Add the cooked beef patties on top of the layered ingredients. Place a slice of cheese on each patty if desired.
  7. Spread more sauce over the top of the patties, then top with shredded lettuce and another pickle slice if using. Place the top bun on gently, pressing slightly to secure the layers.
  8. Repeat the assembly for remaining burgers. Serve immediately with side fries or your favorite accompaniments.

Notes

For an extra nostalgic touch, you can add finely minced onions or additional cheese slices. Feel free to customize toppings to your preference for a personal twist.
