Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp orange zest finely grated
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking dish or ramekins
  • Juice squeezer or zester
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Gather your cranberries, orange zest, and orange juice; set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cranberries with half of the granulated sugar and the orange zest. Toss gently until evenly coated and set aside to let the berries release their juices.
  3. Pour the orange juice over the cranberry mixture, stirring to distribute the flavor evenly. This will help balance the tartness and add moisture to the filling.
  4. Distribute the cranberry filling evenly into individual ramekins or a small baking dish, filling each about three-quarters full. Place them on a baking sheet for easy handling.
  5. In another bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and remaining granulated sugar. Mix well to break up the brown sugar and evenly distribute all dry ingredients.
  6. Add the cold butter pieces to the dry mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and tiny pea-sized lumps form.
  7. Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over each cranberry filling, covering the surface completely and ensuring a thick, textured crust.
  8. Place the baking sheet with the filled ramekins into the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  9. Remove the crisps from the oven and let cool slightly until the bubbling subsides and the topping feels crispy but not burned.
  10. Serve warm, optionally with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra comfort. The vibrant aroma of orange and berry should fill the room.

Notes

For an extra burst of flavor, add a sprinkle of cinnamon or chopped nuts to the crumble topping before baking.
