Spiced Apple Cider

This spiced apple cider combines fresh apples and robust spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger, simmered together to create a warming, aromatic beverage. The method involves mashing apples directly in the cider to intensify fruit flavor and achieve a rich, layered taste with a clear, inviting appearance. The final product is a fragrant, slightly cloudy cider with visible apple chunks and a warm hue, perfect for chilly evenings.

  • 1 stick cinnamon whole cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves whole cloves
  • 1 pinch nutmeg freshly grated
  • 2 cm fresh ginger peeled and sliced

Equipment

  • Heavy-bottomed saucepan
  • Fine sieve
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into chunks for easy mashing.
  2. Pour the apple cider into your heavy-bottomed saucepan and add the apple chunks to it.
  3. Add the whole cinnamon stick, cloves, a pinch of grated nutmeg, and the sliced ginger to the pot.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, allowing the flavors to meld and the aroma to fill your kitchen.
  5. Occasionally mash the apples with a wooden spoon to release their juices and deepen the flavor.
  6. Let the cider simmer gently for about 20 minutes, watching as the mixture thickens slightly and becomes fragrant.
  7. Remove the saucepan from heat and carefully strain the cider through a fine sieve, pressing gently to extract maximum flavor.
  8. Discard the apple pieces and spices, then pour the clear, aromatic cider into mugs.
  9. If desired, garnish with a cinnamon stick, a slice of apple, or a drizzle of honey for extra warmth and presentation.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy the comforting, layered flavors of your homemade spiced apple cider.
