Ingredients

  • 4 cups seedless watermelon chunks preferably chilled
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 2 limes lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 oz tequila optional, for cocktail version
  • 1 oz triple sec optional
  • to taste ice cubes

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Cocktail glasses
  • Strainer (optional)

Method

  1. Place the watermelon chunks and basil leaves into the blender, and start blending on high speed until the mixture is smooth and vibrant red, about 30 seconds.
  2. Squeeze fresh lime juice into the blender, then add the tequila and triple sec if using. Pulse briefly to combine all the flavors.
  3. Fill the blender with ice cubes, then blend again until the mixture is chilled, slightly frothy, and well combined, about 15 seconds.
  4. Taste the mixture and add more lime juice or sweetener if desired. For a smoother drink, strain the mixture through a fine sieve into a pitcher, pressing gently to extract the juice.
  5. Pour the cocktail into chilled glasses, garnishing with a sprig of basil or a small watermelon wedge for a decorative touch.
  6. Serve immediately with extra ice if desired, and enjoy the refreshing, herbaceous flavor of this summer-inspired margarita.

Notes

For a non-alcoholic version, omit the spirits and increase lime juice for extra flavor. Using fresh, ripe watermelon ensures the best natural sweetness. Garnish with basil leaves or a small watermelon wedge for a beautiful presentation.
